NEW YORK — While its a given that things won’t go perfect on a baseball field more often than not, the Tampa Bay Rays couldn’t stop doing things wrong as it found itself in a hole on Friday night.
But the Rays still had time to write those wrongs, and they did just that for one of their most rousing victories of the season.
Danny Jansen capped a six-run sixth inning with a tie-breaking two-run home run as the Rays rallied from a four-run deficit to defeat the New York Mets 7-5 inside Citi Field on Friday night. Brandon Lowe, Yandy Díaz and Jonathan Aranda each collected three hits as Tampa Bay snapped a two-game losing streak.
Jansen came into the game batting .197, but on a 2-2 pitch with two outs and the game tied, he lifted a Max Kranick fastball into the bleachers in left-center field to cap the rally.
“I was looking for a fastball and I think it was a cutter. I was trying to be on time with the fastball and I got the bat head up,” Jansen said.
Tampa Bay starter Taj Bradley and five relievers combined to allow seven hits and, officially, no earned runs. The Rays bullpen combined to just allow three hits, and was benefitted by Rays shoring up their defense in the late innings, it
“I’m concerned because [making errors is not] our style of play,” Cash said. “We have a really good defense. Today, there were some uncharacteristic mishaps out there. It’s going to happen. We bunched them all in one game. … I’ll guess we’ll take it.”
