NEW YORK — Less than one month ago, the St. John’s basketball team had one of its signature moments during the head coaching tenure of Johnnies’ legend Chris Mullin, winning a game in come-from-behind against a nationally-ranked opponent that seemed to assure the team of a long-awaited NCAA Tournament bid.

Three weeks later, the Red Storm were back in The Garden but, this time, they had to make sure they did not lose to the team designated as the last seed in the Big East for a third time this season and officially end their tournament fun.

Guards Shamorie Ponds, Mustapha Heron and Justin Simon each scored 18 points in powering No. 7 seed St. John’s to an 82-74 victory over No. 19 DePaul in the nightcap of the first round of the 2019 Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden. No. 8 Providence defeated ninth-seeded Butler in the first game of the day and of the tournament.
