NEW YORK — While Wednesday’s game was the end of an exhibition tour before the start of the new campaign, Liverpool FC’s arrival in the Big Apple seemed more like an official culmination and send-off to their historic campaign that ended just one month ago, with adoring fans who would not get the chance to see the Reds otherwise coming out in droves to support — and thank — their club in a home known for producing champions .

Liverpool FC ended its three-city preseason tour of the United States with a spirited 2-2 draw against Portuguese power Sporting CP at Yankee Stadium in the Western Union Cup finale.

While ending the tour, one which took them to Notre Dame to play Borussia Dortmund and to Boston to play Sevilla FC, without a victory, the Reds played in front of an announced crowd of over 37,000, most of them donning the well-known red jerseys while singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” at the top of their lungs before the start of the match.

The last full week of July was still a time to honor and remember what Liverpool FC accomplished in the first week of June, winning the Champions League Final against fellow Premier League squad Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid for their sixth European Cup in club history. After today, however, it is back to England for the Reds and time to sharpen the focus of the 2019-20 campaign even more.

“Now nobody should talk to me too often about the Champions League trophy, that is now finished,” said Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp. “Now we can write a new chapter. From a sports point of view, I am happy to go back to England.”
