Down and Distance: Ep: 3 (Week 9)

After a thrilling victory against bitter rival Dallas, Washington hopes the return of Robert Griffin III this week could spark another season-ending surge to the postseason, much like in RG III's rookie season in 2012. (Patrick McDermott/Getty Images)

Surprise!!

The latest edition of Down and Distance previews Week 9 of the NFL season, and at the unofficial halfway point of the year, our hosts – Adesina O. Koiki and Holly Culbertson – spend the majority of the first down segment discussing their biggest surprises and disappointments so far this season.  Teams, players, coaches and even management all are under the microscope, and the hosts are in unison as to which entity has been the ultimate disappointment in the football season so far.

On second down, we catch up with New York Giants running back Rashad Jennings, who was fourth in the NFL in rushing yards after four weeks this season before suffering an MCL sprain last month in a game against the Atlanta Falcons.  In the interview, he shares with us a couple of the profoundly deep conversations that he has had with his Giants teammates this season, along with sharing with us some of his many interests off the field. It’s rare that you get a chance to hear what eraser residue has to do with the path of someone’s life, but listen to Jennings’ perspective on his life and you’ll know how that metaphor takes shape.

Third down brings a preview of seven big games in the NFL on Sunday and Monday, including Jennings’ Giants taking on the Indianapolis Colts on Monday Night Football.  The game of the week is in Foxboro, Mass. on Sunday, as the 16th meeting between Tom Brady and Peyton Manning takes place. Yes, it’s actually the Denver Broncos meeting the New England Patriots in the game and not just the quarterbacks, but part of the discussion about the game includes deciding on which quarterback’s career you would rather have between the two. Fourth down sees Holly wrestle with a hypothetical scenario centering around the possibility of a particular division in each conference owning a monopoly when it comes to the Wild Card teams for the 2014 season.
