Sports can be used as a tool as to how to go about living life while learning responsibility and accountability. In turn, sports also helps to cope with the tragedies and bring people together in times of need, no matter the background of each individual person.
In our latest episode of The A Lot of Sports Talk Podcast, we focus on the hardwood while also focusing on a basketball legend who is winning an even more serious battle off the court. It was our pleasure to sit down with 2013 Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame coach Sylvia Hatchell to begin Episode No. 15. At this time last year, Hatchell, the winningest active head coach in Division I women’s basketball, was at UNC’s Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, getting ready to undergo a five-day round of chemotherapy after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in October of 2013. Because of the treatment for the disease, she did not coach the Tar Heels at any point last season. In our interview, Hatchell shares with us how her treatment and recovery has altered her perspective on life, as well as the many new friends she made during her time away from the basketball court. Now that she is back with her players this season, we also talk about the sixth-ranked Tar Heels team, which as of Tuesday was the only team in women’s college basketball to defeat four ranked teams in the early going of the season.
Speaking of defeating teams, that’s all the Golden State Warriors have been doing since the NBA season tipped off, recently completing a franchise-record 16-game winning streak. Our second guest on the show is Jim Barnett, Warriors television analyst on Comcast Sports Net Bay Area, and he stops by to talk about what has gone so right for Steve Kerr in his first season coaching Golden State. Also, we pose the question whether the play of Draymond Green has him in a position to be an NBA All-Star, and look into the future to see what the Warriors might do once former All-Star forward David Lee, who has only played in one game this season, comes back from a hamstring injury.
