Get ready for a slew of champions to be crowned during the Ides of March.
In our latest edition of The A Lot of Sports Talk Podcast, our focus is on the different championships that are up for grabs in the time known as “March Madness.” Before entering the familiar milieu of the hardwood as it pertains to The Madness, we concentrate on hockey, as our feature interview is with Kaitlin Cimini, lead National Women’s Hockey League writer on Today’s Slapshot and co-host of the podcast Don’t Snow the Goalie. It has been a memorable inaugural season for the four-team NWHL in 2016, and Kate delves into the many things that have stood out the most, both on and off the ice, during the past five months of covering the action in the league, including the outpouring of love from the entire hockey community in support of Denna Laing. Our conversation also breaks down the favorites to win the Isobel Cup, the trophy to be awarded to the winner of the NWHL Playoffs, as well as which players on each of the four franchises, both well-renown amongst casual hockey fans and not, have left a positive impact on their teams with their exceptional play. In a wide-ranging conversation, Kate also discussed the state of the Chicago Blackhawks after reacquiring Andrew Ladd before the trading deadline and whether this year might be the year for the Washington Capitals to make a deep Stanley Cup Playoffs run.
Also occurring in March are the litany of conference tournaments in college basketball, as so many teams whose credentials would leave them short of an NCAA Tournament bid look to fight their way into the Big Dance by virtue of a conference tournament championship. Mount St. Mary’s head coach Jamion Christian reached the NCAA Tournament in 2014 after his Mountaineers won the Northeast Conference Tournament title, and he joins us for a chat after his team defeated Saint Francis College (Brooklyn, NY) on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the NEC Tournament. Very upbeat in his demeanor, Christian, among other things, explains how his team came back from a 14-point second-half deficit to win the game, the key to winning conference tournament games on the road and the sweet treat that his players usually buy after road victories.
