With the chill of winter very much in the air, we thought there was no better time than right now to concentrate on the recent happenings on the ice.
Our latest edition of The A Lot of Sports Talk Podcast focuses on some big events to come – and some that just occurred – in the game of hockey, as one professional North American league gears up for one of its showcase events. Our feature interview is with Calgary Inferno forward Rebecca Johnston, a two-time Olympic gold medalist with Team Canada who is currently preparing to play in the 2017 Canadian Women’s Hockey League All-Star Game this Saturday. Johnston, who led the CWHL in scoring two seasons ago, joined us to discuss what it will mean to take part in the All-Star Game festivities this weekend, which will take place at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, and what her message is to new fans looking to be a part of the CWHL. Also in the conversation, Rebecca let us in on how intimidating it was, at the beginning, to be a part of the Canadian national team, as well as what it was like to be teammates – internationally and domestically – with the recently retired Hayley Wickenheiser, widely regarded as the best to ever lace up the skates in women’s hockey.
Last month saw one of the most thrilling finishes to a tournament that any person will get to witness in 2017 as Team USA won gold at the World Junior Championships, defeating Team Canada in a shootout in the gold medal game in Montréal in the process. Our other feature interview today is with the captain of that team, University of Wisconsin forward Luke Kunin. A couple of weeks ago, the Badgers took part in the Big Ten’s Super Saturday event at Madison Square Garden, and Kunin, who was drafted in the first round last year by the Minnesota Wild, described to us what it was like playing at Madison Square Garden. Of course, we also discussed his experience in Canada at the World Juniors last month and what it was like to captain that side to the gold medal.
