NEW YORK — The Miami Marlins ended up recording at least one hit in each of the first seven innings against their opponent on Tuesday, producing one gilt-edged scoring chance after another. In other words, ingredients to another winning recipe cooked up the New York Mets.

Despite giving up baserunner after baserunner, Zack Wheeler pitched eight scoreless innings as the Mets’ domination on the mound continued in a 5-0 victory over the Marlins, New York’s 12th victory in its last 13 games. Catcher Wilson Ramos smacked a three-run home run in the third inning and Pete Alonso hit his 36th jack of the year, leaving the latter just three homers shy of tying the National League rookie record.

Along with providing the biggest swing of the game, Ramos teamed with Wheeler to successfully navigate through constant Marlins threats all game. Wheeler’s sinker was the key to the battery’s success, with three double plays being part of the 13 ground ball outs induced on the night.

“The sinker worked good tonight,” said Ramos after the game about his work with Wheeler. “We mixed it up a little bit with other pitches but the sinker was the key tonight. He did it really well and eight solid innings for him.”

Wheeler, who was widely rumored to be shipped off before the July 31 trade deadline, has now thrown 15 consecutive scoreless innings since then. Despite allowing eight hits and a walk, Wheeler pitched himself out of trouble time and again, helping to hold the Marlins to a whopping 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position as a team tonight.

“He’s a guy with ace-type stuff,” said Alonso. “He’s a guy that gives us a really good chance when he’s on the mound. You could see that tonight. He’s got a hell of an arm and when he’s on, he does a really good job of stifling opposing offenses.”
