NEW YORK — The New York Mets sealed last night’s important win in the ninth inning. Twice.

After a defensive lapse gave the Arizona Diamondbacks one last crack at keeping the game alive, Mets reliever Justin Wilson struck out Wilmer Flores with the tying run at third to preserve New York’s 3-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Combined with the Cubs’ extra-inning loss to San Diego later in the evening, the Mets are now three games back of the second Wild Card spot.

With runners on first and third and one out, Alonso smothered a ground ball by Ketel Marte and appeared to have the runner at first base, pinch runner Tim LoCastro, hung up to potentially turn a game-ending double play. Instead of attempting to tag LoCastro while heading to first to step on the bag, Alonso stepped on the bag before throwing to third base to try to retire Nick Ahmed at third. Ahmed made it back to third while LoCastro was able to advance to second, putting the go-ahead run in scoring position.

However, Wilson, who came on to get the last out of the eighth inning, struck out Flores to end the threat and the game.

Todd Frazier drove in each of the three runs for the Mets, smacking a two-run double in the second inning before another run-scoring double in his next at-bat in the fourth.

Eduardo Escobar hit his 34th home run in the eighth inning for Arizona to cut the Diamondbacks’ deficit to 3-2.
