ARLINGTON, Texas — Before the New York Yankees take to the field for the postseason next week against the Minnesota Twins, the latter confirmed as New York’s first playoff opponent earlier in the week, they would like to have a one-up on Minnesota in a high-profile category in which those teams are the two trendsetters.

After Friday night’s home run fest in the DFW, the Yankees now have the upper hand.

Giancarlo Stanton hit the first of New York’s six home runs in the first inning, a blast that also was the Bronx Bombers’ 300th of the season, in New York’s way to a 14-7 drubbing of the Texas Rangers to start the final series of the season and in the history of Globe Life Park in Arlington.

Cameron Maybin, Brett Gardner, Gio Urshela, Mike Ford and Austin Romine also homered after the 300 milestone was hit by the Yankees, who pounded out 18 hits.

No team in Major League history had hit a combined 300 home runs in a season until the Twins accomplished the feat a few days ago, nipping the Yankees to that mark. New York’s barrage tonight not only put them in that rarefied power-hitting air, but also surged them to 305 home runs and past Minnesota (303) for the league lead as the squads get ready to square off in the American League Division Series starting next week.

“It is fun to see the back and forth,” said Stanton, who hit just his third home run in an injury-shortened 2019. “I know they were leading most of the year, so we’ve got to make sure [the Twins] don’t catch us. I think that’s exciting for baseman. As a spectator, you want to see homers.”.
