WASHINGTON — New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso got knocked down and bloodied before the first game of the new season had even come to its conclusion, caused by a hit by pitch that looked scary from the second the pitched ball hit his helmet. Two nights later, and after another hit batsmen of a Mets player that had Alonso and the rest of his teammates hopping mad, the Polar Bear made the loudest noise with his bat on a chilly Saturday evening that clinched a season-opening series victory.

Alonso launched a towering drive that cut through a stiff breeze into the left field bleachers for his first-career grand slam in the fifth inning, all the offense the Mets would need in a 5-0 victory over the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park on Saturday evening. Chris Bassitt struck out eight batters over six innings in his New York debut as the Mets have won the first three games of the four game set, outscoring Washington 17-4 in the process.
