PHILADELPHIA — The Arizona Diamondbacks, already a formidable presence in the National League in 2017, might prove to be too much to handle if they continue with their current road form.

Paul Goldschmidt broke open the game with a two-run double in the seventh inning and Arizona’s pitching staff was able to prevent the big hit from the Phillies as the Diamondbacks won its fourth consecutive game away from home with a 5-1 decision at Citizens Bank Park.

It was 2-1 in favor of the Diamondbacks in the seventh inning when, with runners on first and second, Goldschmidt drove an offering from Phillies reliever Casey Fien into the left-center field gap to score relief pitcher Jorge De La Rosa and leadoff hitter Daniel Descalso to give the Diamondbacks bit of breathing room. Two batters later, Brandon Drury drove in Goldschmidt with a single up the middle to provide the final run and final margin of the game.

The win marked the fourth consecutive away victory for the Diamondbacks, improving their season mark away from home to .500 at 17-17 after losing 10 of their first 16 away games to start the season. Arizona also has won five consecutive games overall, with the four previous wins before today coming by one run.

Diamondbacks starter Zack Godley wound up with a no-decision but did strike out eight Phillies in only 5.2 innings pitched. The only run of the game he and the Diamondbacks allowed came on a sacrifice fly by Philadelphia catcher Andrew Knapp in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Maikel Franco to tie the contest at one apiece. Godley was lifted after that for reliever De La Rosa, who got pinch hitter Daniel Nava to line out to third with runners on the corners to end the Phillies threat.

One inning later and now down 5-1, the Phillies loaded the bases with two outs. Arizona left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin came in to face left-handed hitter Michael Saunders, who had doubled in his previous at-bat. Saunders lined a ball down the first-base line but was caught in the air by Goldschmidt to end the Phillies’ last serious threat. .

Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff, who came in with an 0-7 record, had his hard-luck 2017 continue today. He allowed only five hits and one run in six innings of work, but left the game after the sixth down by a run before the Phillies tied it up in the bottom of the frame.
