NEWARK, NJ — It was a couple of New York City guards that got the best of a team coached by a New York City basketball legend.
Brooklyn native Khadeen Carrington poured in 24 points and Bronx native Desi Rodriguez chipped in with 23 points as the Seton Hall Pirates recovered after blowing a 15-point second-half lead to defeat the St. John’s Red Storm 75-70 to improve to 2-0 in Big East play.
Despite the loss, St. John’s head coach Chris Mullin can take heart in the fact that his team, playing without starting guards Shamorie Ponds and Marcus LoVett (both with knee injuries), went toe-to-toe with a team that could find itself in the second week of the NCAA Tournament before all is said and done this season.
“A game like this will help win games for us down the road,” Mullin said.
After falling behind 14-5 to start the game, Seton Hall got back into the contest using the three-pointer, as they hit 10 out of their 18 attempts from behind the arc to open up a 10-point lead at 43-33 at halftime.
The lead grew to 15 at 58-43 after a Rodriguez jumper with 13:40 remaining, but the Red Storm responded with a 15-2 run to cut the Pirates lead to two and set up a grandstand finish. With just under four minutes remaining in the game, Mullin got a technical foul after complaining to the officials that guard Justin Simon was fouled on a drive to the basket. Though the Pirates only made one of the two technical foul shots and missed a shot on their offensive possession afterward, Seton Hall was able to put the game away with a number of offensive rebounds, including a rebound off an airball and layup by Pirates big man Angel Delgado to give his team as 70-65 lead with 1:43 remaining.
Delgado ended the game with 12 points and 12 rebounds, with eight of his rebounds coming off the offensive glass. He also had six assists in the contest.
The Red Storm were led by forward Tariq Owens, who had 19 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots.
