FORT WORTH, Texas — In digging deep to come away with a much-needed conference victory, the TCU Horned Frogs continued to launch from deep, resulting in a three-point assault that was as good as the school has seen in almost a decade in the Big 12.
Desmond Bane led the Horned Frogs with 17 points and hit five of TCU’s 15 three-pointers in a 68-57 victory over Kansas State at Schollmaier Arena on Saturday afternoon. Backcourt mates Jaire Grayer and RJ Nembhard each scored 15 points as the 15 threes hit by the Horned Frogs tied a school record for the most triples made in a Big 12 Conference game.
The three-point barrage came mostly after the Wildcats closed out the first half on a 9-2 run to take a 27-26 lead at intermission. TCU sank nine of its 17 attempts from three in the second half, with most of those shots coming right after Kansas State had either pulled even or went on top. Nembhard’s three at the 8:04 mark put the Horned Frogs up 51-50, and two possessions later, Bane’s three with 6:33 left put the Horned Frogs up for good at 54-52.
Bane’s three was the start of a decisive 10-0 Horned Frogs’ run, as PJ Fuller added a three-point play and Grayer nailed a three and converted on a free throw that opened up a 61-52 lead with 4:17 remaining. Kansas State got no closer than eight for the rest contest.
Xavier Sneed led the Wildcats with 15 points, though he was 0-for-4 from three in a game where Kansas State made just two of its 12 three-point attempts. David Sloan had 11 points while Cartier Diarra added 10 points off the Wildcat bench.
