NEW YORK — It was still less than a decade ago when the University of Connecticut could claim that Madison Square Garden was its second home, with its once-hegemonic control of the conference the lynchpin for league and NCAA Tournament championships that dot the rafters of their home gyms. On their way to rounding into form before this year’s iteration of the Big East Tournament, the Huskies once again put forth their latest scintillating performance in front of the legions of fans who made it down south to turn the World’s Most Famous Arena into a home game in the Nutmeg State.
Jordan Hawkins led four players in double figures in scoring with 20 points as the No. 18 Huskies were on fire from the field all game during a 95-86 victory over the St. John’s Red Storm in a matinee game at Madison Square Garden. Joey Calcaterra came off the bench to score 15 of Connecticut’s 32 points off the bench.
After a stretch in which UConn, once ranked No. 2 in the country, went 1-4 in January, the Huskies have won six of their last seven games. Five of the six victories have come by at least nine points.
“I was just impressed by the way that we played offensively,” UConn head coach Dan Hurley said. “Just making shots, and we looked like a team that had some real offensive punch.”
