In his freshman season, Brandon Parrish was part of a TCU team that went 0-18 in conference play. After that nightmarish campaign in the Big 12, being part of a team that could call itself a champion while in college seemed like the longest of long shots.
Then again, New York City has a way of making near-impossible dreams come to life.
Parrish, one of the senior leaders on the squad, as well as the rest of the Horned Frogs can now indeed call themselves “champions,” that after dispatching Georgia Tech 88-56 to take home the school’s first ever postseason championship on Thursday night. Guard Kenrich Williams, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, capped off his comeback from that setback with 25 points and 12 rebounds in the title game, earning him the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player award. Williams, along with point guard Alex Robinson (10 points, 11 assists) spearheaded the team’s early charge out of the gate against the Yellow Jackets, building a 20-3 lead and not looking back. TCU’s 24 wins this season are now tied for the second-most wins in a single season in school history.
For head coach Jamie Dixon, a TCU alum, closing out the season with a championship – albeit the NIT instead of the NCAA – is more than a satisfactory way to end his first season as head man in Fort Worth. With many of the team’s core coming back for 2017-18, the Horned Frogs appear set to make a serious run at the NCAA Tournament, which they haven’t participated in since 1998.
