Sadly, the end of summer is fast approaching as we speed towards Labor Day. Fortunately for sports fans, however, the Labor Day weekend is always full of sporting goodness for us to devour: the start of college and professional football, U.S. Open, Major League Baseball pennant races, etc.
In our latest edition of The A Lot of Sports Talk Podcast, we are joined by three guests who are in the throes of some exciting action as some professional seasons wind down, as others are just about to kick off. The past few days have seen us stalk the grounds of the United States National Tennis Center as we followed all of the happenings of the 2015 U.S. Open, where Serena Williams is looking to become the first player since 1988 (Steffi Graf) to win the calendar-year Grand Slam. One of the players looking to stop the march to history is former world No. 2 Agnieszka Radwanska, our first guest on the podcast. The interview took place during the Connecticut Open last week, and it was a pleasure to be able to hear Radwanska open up about the tough circumstances she had to grow up in in Poland as she was developing her eclectic tennis game. Along with some of those stories of struggle, she shared her thoughts on Serena’s quest for a Grand Slam, her thoughts on becoming a role model for other players on the tour, as well as which player she dumped a bucket of ice water on a while back. (We tried our best to get her to fess up, so listen in to see if she told us which player she did that to.)
Not only is the last major getting ready to be completed in tennis, the WNBA season is just a couple of weeks away from lowering the curtain on its regular season. Our next guest on the podcast is our feature interview, Indiana Fever head coach and television basketball analyst Stephanie White. Stepping in to fill the shoes of legendary head coach Lin Dunn, who retired after last season, White has kept the Fever’s ship heading in the right direction as Indiana has been one of the league’s hottest teams over the past couple of months. In our discussion, she shares with us what makes Tamika Catchings so special, the identity of her team, why they have played so well over the past few months, and what has become of her championship paraphernalia from when she won the 1999 NCAA women’s basketball championship while a star at Purdue University.
Tennis and women’s basketball are wrapping up soon, but the National Football is just a few days away from starting its 96th season. To wrap up our show, we caught up with New York Giants tight end Larry Donnell, one of the breakout performers during the 2014 NFL season. In our conversation, he shares with us how the Giants’ offense is looking in training camp under second-year offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, what allowed Donnell to have a career year 2014 and the importance of his family being with him and traveling to almost every game to see him play. Also, for you fantasy football enthusiasts, he lets us in on his team name in fantasy for the 2015 season.
