Not only do the leaves start to fall at this time of month, the title hopes of many teams in different sports, whether in the regular season or in the playoffs, start to fall as the stretch run rapidly approaches them.
On our latest episode of The A Lot of Sports Talk Podcast, our main focus is on the Major League Baseball postseason, and specifically the Texas Rangers, the American League West Division champions. The feature interview on the show is with Emily Jones, longtime sports anchor and on-field reporter for the Texas Rangers, who turned an eight-game deficit at the end of July into their third division championship in the last six seasons. In the interview, Jones discusses the impact of first-year manager Jeff Banister, how the bullpen has turned its performance around the past few months, and which Texas Ranger player had a terrific stretch run that corresponded with him having a conversation with his wife before his improved play. Also, Jones lets us in on how Josh Hamilton has settled in with the Rangers in his second go-round, a few months after he was traded by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who cut ties with him after his drug relapse in February.
October is not when the playoffs start in football, but having a good month right after the first quarter of the season usually goes a long way in how the stretch run will go when the weather, as well as team’s fortunes, turn. Justin Pugh, offensive tackle for the New York Giants, stops by to discuss how the New York Giants have turned it around after an 0-2 start to even their record. Pugh also discusses the talents of his defensive teammates, as the Big Blue D currently ranks first in the National League in stopping the run. Lastly, Pugh relives the time earlier this season where a bet almost cost him his trademark, perfectly-groomed beard.
