NEWRK, NJ — There were not too many two-goal comebacks by the Detroit Red Wings over the past few years during their time of transition and rebuilding. On Saturday, the Red Wings continued to take the steps necessary to once again become a threat to the rest of the National Hockey League, extending its run of good form with another grind-it-out win away from the Motor City.

Dylan Larkin scored with 52 seconds left in overtime and goaltender Jonathan Bernier stood tall by making 38 saves as Detroit defeated the New Jersey Devils 3-2, the Red Wings’ fifth victory in its last six games.

“It’s awesome and feels good coming in here after games and we’ve come back from behind, finding ways to win instead of last year, when it was going the opposite way,” Larkin said. “seems like now it’s a different way every time.”

The way to victory this time was to climb back from a 2-0 deficit, as the Devils were able to take advantage of outshooting Detroit 15-4 in the first period with Pavel Zacha’s first goal of the season at 11:35.

New Jersey, who exceeded many pundits’ expectations last season in part due to their penchant for creating gilt-edged chances on the penalty kill, scored its first goal of the season while a man down to double their lead, as Blake Coleman tallied at 15:53 for a 2-0 Devils lead.

Detroit responded quickly to New Jersey’s second goal to get back in the game before the second intermission, as Luke Glendening scored with 1:34 remaining in the second to cut Detroit’s deficit to 2-1. With 6:23 remaining in the third, Michael Rasmussen scored to tied the game for the Red Wings.

Larkin then played the hero in the overtime session, scoring on a 2-on-1 with Anthony Mantha as Detroit did not have the lead at any point in the game until Larkin’s game winner.
