NEWARK, N.J. — The sloppiness that is checkered throughout the Tampa Bay Lightning’s performances throughout the first few games of the season once again reared its ugly head: taking too many penalties, allowing numerous gilt-edged scoring chances and leaving their goaltenders out on an island for many stretches of the game. At least after tonight’s far-from-clean performance, the Lightning can learn from their mistakes after a victory.

Tyler Johnson scored 1:16 into overtime as the Lightning escaped an uneven performance with a thrilling 7-6 victory over the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center on Wednesday evening.

Along with the game-winning goal, Johnson had two assists, joining linemates Ondrej Palat (two goals, assist) and Bradyden Point (goal, two assists) with three points as Tampa Bay came back from a two-goal deficit early in the third period and overcame a 42-23 shot discrepancy to take two points.
