DALLAS — A blown lead just seconds away from clinching victory threatened to put a damper on what would be a perfect road trip for the Colorado Avalanche, but they rebounded just in time to continue their scintillating form.

Mikko Rantanen scored the only goal in the shootout, lifting the Avalanche to a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center on Monday evening. Cale Makar and Alex Newhook scored in regulation for Colorado, who has now won seven of its last eight contests..

Jason Robertson scored both goals for the Stars, including a tally with 26 seconds remaining and goaltender Jake Oettinger pulled from goal to tie the score.

Rantanen scored the only goal in the shootout on a forehand, and Avalanche goalkeeper Alexander Georgiev was able to keep out all three shootout attempts from Dallas, who have yet to win a game in three tries after a game has lasted past regulation.

“It’s huge for us, huge,” Newhook said. “Obviously a time where we’re trying to build and missing a lot of guys in our lineup. But guys are stepping up, and to get six points on a trip where we’re playing three pretty good teams, that’s huge for us.”

Along with the Central Division-leading Stars, the Avalanche defeated the Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals on the road trip to earn all six points out of six on offer during this time away from Colorado. Going into tonight, the Avalanche were 6-0-1 in the month, outscoring their opponents 29-13 during the stretch. Their only loss during the stretch was a 3-2 defeat at home against the St. Louis Blues on Nov. 14, the game before this recent road trip started.

The Avalanche outshot Dallas 35-24 and were close to taking the game in regulation before Robertson’s heroics sent the game to an extra session.

“We shouldn’t have given up that extra point, that’s my fault on that one,” Colorado defenseman Cale Makar said. “Just bad coverage read, and then right off my stick far-side. That game should have been ended in regulation. I feel like we outplayed them for most of the night, gave them a couple of chances, but overall, I feel like we minimized it as a group.”
