Will one of the top teams in lacrosse in the 2017 season reach heights that it has never achieved in program history?
It’s judgement day once again for the No. 3 team in the country, the Ohio State Buckeyes, who are looking to make their first national semifinal as they play Duke in the first of two quarterfinal games in the 2017 NCAA men’s lacrosse tournament on the campus of Hofstra University in Long Island. The Buckeyes have reached the quarterfinals four times in its program history, but have lost in that round each of the past three occasions. The Blue Devils, along with the other two teams squaring off today, Notre Dame and Denver, have all reached the national championship in their program’s history, with Denver and Duke accounting for three of the last four national championships. Ohio State, despite its recent success, has never reached the Final Four, but can do so with a win today against the Blue Devils.
In the second game, Denver and Notre Dame meet in a rematch of the 2015 national semifinals, where Denver scored in overtime on its way to the school’s first national championship two days later. If you’re into the grunt work involved in lacrosse as much as the flair of the attack men in front of the crease, you might very well be in for a treat, especially when concentrating on the Pioneers. Denver has one of the best face-off men the game has ever seen, New Jersey native Trevor Baptiste, who is a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award, given to the nation’s best player.
As always, our photographer, Robert Cole, is on the field snapping quality pictures, this time from James M. Shuart Stadium, the birthplace of future NFL stars – and Hofstra alums – Wayne Chrebet and Marques Colston.
