WASHINGTON — D.C. United’s stay at the top of the Eastern Conference after tonight’s victory may very well be short-lived, but how they got their three points on Saturday may prove that this year’s edition of the Black-and-Red will not occupy the bottom of the Eastern Conference like it did last season.
Designated player Christian Benteke scored in the 90th minute before Theodore Ku-DiPietro netted eight minutes into second-half injury time as D.C. United came from behind to defeat Toronto FC 3-2 at Audi Field in the opening weekend in Major League Soccer.
Like Benteke, Mateusz Klich us the other Designated Player on D.C. United, and, like Benteke, he found himself on the scoresheet, scoring a on a powerful shot from outside the area for the game’s opening goal in the 13th minute.
“Delighted for [Klich], he’s been excellent all preseason, to get his goal,” D.C. United head coach Wayne Rooney said. “And Christian, we’ve done a lot of work on being in the middle of the goal, where you score goals. And although it was not his best game, tonight he had an important moment, getting us tied 2-2 and then Ku gets the winner.”
The match went into intermission with Kilch’s goal being the only tally of the game, but Toronto scored twice in the second half to take the lead. Federico Bernardeschi converted on a penalty in the 66th minute before Mark-Anthony Kaye gave Toronto the lead 17 minutes later.
