WHITE PLAINS, NY — The shooting percentage could have been better for the New York Liberty, and a one-time 16-point lead could have grown bigger instead of dissipate in the throes of a second-half rally from their visitors. But it was in the fourth quarter, where the Liberty have had a number of struggles during their slow start, where New York closed things out to temporarily stop their poor run of form.

Tina Charles once again led the way for the Liberty with 29 points while New York’s defense and ball movement set the tone all game long during a 79-72 victory over the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday evening, snapping a two-game losing streak. Guards Shavonte Zellous (13 points) and Kia Nurse (11) also scored in double figures for the Liberty.

New York struggled with its shooting, making a shade under 40 percent from the field, but, when they did make shots, it was the product of good ball movement as the Liberty had 23 assists on their 29 field goals made in the contest. On the other side of the ball, the Liberty held the Dream to under 30 percent shooting for the game, holding Atlanta to just six points in the first quarter on their way to an 11-point lead at the end of the game’s first 10 minutes.

Epitomizing the effort put in on both ends of the floor, Liberty guard Brittany Boyd, who was scoreless in 16 minutes of play, dished out 11 assists, a team record for most assists without making a field goal. She also came up with two steals and a block while being her usual active self on the defensive end.

Dream forward Angel McCoughtry led all players with 39 points and 14 rebounds as her incessant drives to the basket led to an astounding 22 free throws attempted in the contest. (She made 19.) Atlanta made a game of it after it was down by 16 late in the second quarter, going on a 29-13 run spanning the second and third quarters to tie the game at 47. Atlanta, however, was never able to take the lead at any point in the contest.
