WASHINGTON — To say that Washington Mystics star Elena Delle Donne was ready from the start of today’s game against one of the best teams in the league would be a gross understatement.
Delle Donne scored 15 points, including 10 in the first quarter, to lead four Mystics players in double figures during Washington’s 71-63 victory over the Connecticut Sun at the Entertainment and Sports Arena on Sunday afternoon. Ariel Atkins added 12 points, six assists and four rebounds as the Mystics won their second consecutive home game.
Delle Donne missed Washington’s previous game, a loss against the New York in Brooklyn, on a scheduled day off as she and the team continue to manage her playing schedule. She looked sharp from the outset against the Sun, making four consecutive shots from the field after missing her first attempt on her way to 10 first-quarter points.
All 15 of Delle Donne’s points came in the first half, reaching the 15-point mark just over 15 minutes into the game on a fadeaway jumper that gave the Mystics a 40-25 lead with 4:40 to go in the second quarter.
Despite Delle Donne’s lack of points in the second half, the Mystics were able to build upon their 16-point halftime lead in the third quarter, with Natasha Cloud’s layup just before the buzzer giving the Mystics a 61-41 lead going into the final stanza. The Mystics maintained a double-digit lead for most of the fourth quarter to see off the game.
Reigning WNBA MVP Jonquel Jones had 15 points and 16 rebounds to pace the Sun, who had won six of their last seven games going into Sunday. Jones was the only Connecticut player to score in double figures as the Sun made just 36.7 percent of their shots from the field (22-for-60).
