NEW YORK \u2014 So many numbers on Corbin Burnes’ final pitching line on Wednesday evening made it evident once more this season that he is far from the form that established him an one of the elite pitchers in Major League Baseball over the past few years. But the one number that did shine was the most important, just one run allowed, allowing the Diamondbacks’ prized free-agent haul to finally show that he is the bona fide ace that Arizona paid a pretty penny for.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Burnes overcame control issues and dug deep in earning his first win of the season, allowing four hits and one run over six innings as the Diamondbacks defeated the New York Mets 4-1 inside Citi Field on Wednesday evening. Geraldo Perdomo gave Arizona the lead with a two-out, two-run single in the seventh inning, and two sacrifice flies in the ninth gave the Diamondbacks much-needed insurance runs as New York scored two in the ninth before reliever Ryan Thompson recorded the final out with the bases loaded.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Arizona missed out on playing in the postseason by one game last season, finishing immediately behind the Mets for the final Wild Card spot, prompting the franchise to pursue and, eventually, land Burnes, the 2021 National League Cy Young Award winner while with the Milwaukee Brewers who most recently put together another productive seasons in his only one with the Baltimore Orioles before hitting free agency. His first five starts of his new era in Arizona left a lot to be desired, however, without a win and sporting an ERA over four.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Those numbers probably should have gotten worse going up against the Mets and their league-leading 21-9 record, issuing five walks, giving up a third-inning solo home run to Mark Vientos for the first run of the game, and also committing a balk when he disengaged from the rubber for a third time with Juan Soto on first base. But similar to what many top pitchers do and have done throughout, Burnes got outs when outs were needed, and the most important outs of the night came at the very outset.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Burnes loaded the bases four batters in, with Francisco Lindor’s lead-off double preceding back-to-back one-out walks to Pete Alonso and Vientos. The threat came and went after Burnes struck out Starling Marte on a slider before inducing a ground out off the bat of Jeff McNeil.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The fifth inning also saw Lindor lead off with a hit, a single, and after Soto reached on a fielder’s choice, he advanced to second on Burnes’ balk. Alonso then walked, bringing up Vientos, who had taken Burnes deep in his previous at-bat. Relying an his slider, Burnes eventually got the ground ball that turned into a 6-4-3 double play to end that threat.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Arizona’s relievers had no issues in the seventh and eighth after relieving Burnes, but got into the spirit of making things hard after Justin Martinez allowed a solo shot to Tyrone Taylor to cut Arizona’s lead to 4-2, the first of four batters to reach base to start the ninth for New York. Lindor and Soto walked, and after Ryan Thompson came on to relieve Martinez, Pete Alonso was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no out out.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Thompson held the fort, as he struck out Vientos before allowing an RBI groundout by Jesse Winker to move the Diamondbacks within one out of a win \u2014 yet move the Mets to within 90 feet of tying the game. Thompson intentionally walked McNeil before getting Francisco Alvarez to ground out to third to end the game.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
