NEW YORK \u2014 The surname Murphy has been kind to the New York Mets over the years, from having the team’s soundtrack for decades being laid by legendary radio voice Bob Murphy to the heroics of 2015 NLCS MVP Daniel Murphy on the way to New York’s most recent World Series appearance.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

However, the “Murphy” that is associated with the Mets right now is Murphy’s Law, and even as it looks like they are finally emerging from their two week funk, they suffered a major blow on the injury front on what seemed like an innocuous play on Thursday night.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Mets won their second game in a row after a 4-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves, yet the game was overshadowed by the serious injury suffered by starting pitcher Griffin Canning in the third inning, as he crumpled onto the mound after a fluky misstep off the mound after throwing a pitch that was put into play. Reminiscent of similar incidents in the sports world over the past couple of years, Canning’s left calf “popped” right before falling to the ground, almost assuredly a sign of a damaged Achilles tendon.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Canning is the latest Mets starter this month to get injured, joining the Kodai Senga (hamstring) and Tylor Megill (elbow strain), and all has come during a stretch that, before yesterday, saw New York lose 10 of 11 games to fall out of first place in the National League East. (Tonight’s win, along with a loss by the Philadelphia Phillies earlier in the afternoon, moved the Mets back to first place by a half game.)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

New York and its pitching staff regrouped and rallied after the injury, as four relievers ended up combining with Canning to complete a three-hit shutout. Austin Warren was first out of the bullpen after being pressed into duty, allowing just one hit and striking out two in 2 1\/3 innings to earn his first win as a Met. Dedniel N\u00fa\u00f1ez struck out four during his two scoreless innings before Ryne Stanek and Edwin D\u00edaz each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the night.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Pete Alonso had an RBI single in the fifth inning amongst his three hits while Jeff McNeil drove in two runs on a two-out single up the middle in the seventh inning for some insurance.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
