UNCASVILLE, CONNECTICUT \u2014 On many occasions, the word Connecticut is said in the same breath as New York, as the area of the country widely associated with the term “tri-state area” inextricably links those two (alongside New Jersey). The two states once again proved inseparable on Saturday when a couple of New York’s finest on the basketball court played \u2014 and then paid homage \u2014 to the state that shaped their basketball careers as much any other for what will probably be the final time.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Liberty forward Jonquel Jones had 23 points and 11 rebounds while helping New York come back from an eight-point first-quarter deficit before it defeated the Connecticut Sun 82-75 inside Mohegan Sun Arena. Marine Johannes added 17 points while making five three-pointers and Breanna Stewart added 11 points and four rebounds.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

New York made its final appearance inside Mohegan Sun Arena before the Sun’s eventual move to Houston after the season, and that allowed both Jones and Stewart one last time to play in front of a crowd in the Nutmeg State, a special place for both players. Stewart won four national championships in four seasons at the University of Connecticut from 2013-2016, and Jones started her WNBA career as a member of the Sun in 2016 and, three years later, led the Sun to the WNBA Finals. In 2021, Jones won league MVP while wearing Connecticut colors. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cClearly, a lot of memories here, a lot of great people,\u201d Jones said. \u201cSad to see the Sun go but excited to really see what things will turn into and it\u2019ll be my first time to be able to visit Houston and all of that stuff next year.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Before the start of the Liberty’s first game this season in Connecticut on June 8, Jones was honored at center court as part of the team\u2019s \u201cSun Legends\u201d campaign. Not too long after the start of today’s contest, Jones quickly reminded the fans why she is indeed a legend in those stomping grounds, scoring 13 of her 23 points in the second-quarter, singlehandedly outscoring the Sun in a frame that New York erased an eight-point first-quarter deficit with a 27-10 surge in the second.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJust one of those franchises that for me, has a special place in my heart,\u201d Jones said. \u201cSo it felt good to get the win tonight to come into an atmosphere that can be tricky at times and sometimes hard to win in. And I think we did a really good job of weathering their runs and some of the things that they were doing and being able to come out on top.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Stewart had one of her worst shooting games of the season as she shot just 3-of-12 from the field, but still received support from the crowd that also saw her become the best player in college basketball before her stellar professional career started to unfold.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnytime coming here knowing that getting support from Husky fans and things like that is really special,\u201d Stewart said. \u201cIt\u2019s tough to see the team go but like [Jonquel] just said, it\u2019s exciting to see what\u2019s coming. I like that we had a lot of our fans for us today … but yeah, a lot of great memories here and happy that the last one was a win.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
