NEW YORK \u2014 The cold awaiting the New York Mets upon the start of their road trip this weekend would have appeared even more gelid if a come-from-ahead defeat was clinched at the end of Thursday afternoon’s see-saw affair. Instead, the red-hot bat of Pete Alonso crushed a ball that appeared headed for the sun, just in the nick of time to secure another series victory for the Mets.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Alonso crushed a walk-off two-run home run to begin (and end) the bottom of the 10th<\/sup> inning, lifting the Mets to a 7-6 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Citi Field in the final game of New York’s seven-game homestand. The homer was Alonso’s 10th<\/sup> of the season, giving him sole possession of the Major League lead, and allowed New York to escape with a victory after it allowed the Cardinals to score single runs in the seventh and ninth to tie and a run in the tenth to temporarily put St. Louis ahead.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After the Cardinals pushed the automatic runner home to start extra innings, St. Louis closer Giovanny Gallegos came on to try and close the door and earn the Redbirds a split of the four-game set. With Francisco Lindor the free runner at second for New York, it took Pete just two pitches to take care of business: a slider that Alonso laid off for a ball to start the at-bat, then a fastball he sent into the second deck in left field to end the at-bat.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“I was just looking in my zone, in my area,” said Alonso, who went 5-for-8 with seven RBI and three runs scored in the last two games of the series. “He came right where I was looking, right where I wanted it, and I capitalized.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
