COLLEGE PARK, MARYLAND — While donning the throwback uniforms that some of the school’s greatest-ever players and teams performed in, the current iteration of the Maryland Terrapins football team put on another stellar offensive performance on Saturday that equaled a record of one of the school’s all-time great squads.

Taulia Tagovailoa threw for 314 yards and a touchdown while Antwain Littleton rushed for 120 yards and a score as Maryland defeated Michigan State 27-13 at SECU Stadium on Saturday afternoon. After coming up just short last week in a one-possession loss to another team from the Wolverine State, at No. 4 Michigan, the Terrapins used their defense to help close out the game, as they held the Spartans scoreless in the second half to even up their record in conference play.

The 27 points scored marked the seventh consecutive game the Terrapins reached that number on the scoreboard, the first time since 1984 that a Maryland team had as long of a streak of scoring at least 27 points. That team is most famous for completing the biggest single-game comeback in Division I history, a 42-40 victory in the Orange Bowl against Miami after going down 31-0, and ended the season with a perfect 5-0 record in ACC play and a 9-3 overall mark.

Maryland’s offense gave its defense more than enough points to work with in the first half, scoring touchdowns on its first two possessions of the game. Both of those first-quarter scores came on a ground: a 15-yard run by Littleton and a 2-yard run up the middle by Colby McDonald. On those two drives combined, Tagovailoa completed nine of 10 passes for 111 yards, including a 44-yard strike to Corey Dyches on the first play of Maryland’s second drive after the Spartans tied the score at 7-7 on their opening drive of the game.
