ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN — The Big House could not contain the big game of Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, who once again led the Texas Longhorns to one of the most impressive non-conference away victories a team can accomplish on the road to the College Football Playoff.
Ewers threw for 246 yards and three scores while the Longhorns defense stiffened all game as Texas cruised to a 31-12 victory over No. 10 Michigan in the first ever regular-season matchup between two of the traditional powers of college football.
Along with last year’s win against Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Texas became the first time to win road games against the Crimson Tide and Wolverines in back-to-back seasons since Notre Dame pulled off the feat in 1978 and 1979 — the first two seasons in South Bend after Joe Montana graduated. The Longhorns hope that, like Montana in 1977, Ewers can lead the Longhorns to a national championship during his time at the Forty Acres, and his six combined touchdowns in those two showpiece road games (along with zero interceptions) sure are a good indicator that Texas is ready for a title run.
“This one game isn’t going to define our season, but I think it would serve as a pretty good barometer of the type of team that we could be,” coach Steve Sarkisian said.
Michigan saw a few streaks snapped with their defeat; the Wolverines had won 16 games in a row overall, a Big Ten-record 29 consecutive regular-season victories and 23 straight home games all go by the boards.
