NEW YORK — Hitting right behind Aaron Judge might be akin to winning the New York State lottery, and for the first three games of the season, all Jazz Chisholm Jr. has done is continue to hit the jackpot with almost every time at-bat, and they both combined to continue the offensive assault that carried the defending American League champions to an opening series sweep.
Chisholm cracked two more home runs, including a three-run shot immediately after Judge was intentionally walked in the seventh, as the Yankees pounded the Milwaukee Brewers 12-3 to complete a three-game demolition to start the new season. Earlier in the game, Judge hit a two-run shot in the first inning to open the scoring, his fourth home run in the last two games after he hit three of New York’s nine long balls in yesterday’s 20-9 romp.
Yankees batters have hit 15 home runs through their first three games, matching the most home runs by a team through their first three games in Major League history, tying the 2006 Detroit Tigers. New York is also just the third team in Major League history to score at least 36 runs over their first three games of a season, joining the 1954 Chicago Cubs (41) and 1978 Milwaukee Brewers (40).
Without the likes of Juan Soto (now with the Mets), Anthony Rizzo (still a free agent) and Giancarlo Stanton (on the injured list), the early candidate to appear in Judge’s immediate orbit in the lineup has fallen to Chisholm, who recorded his sixth career multi-homer game on Sunday.
Marcus Stroman was one out away from qualifying for the victory, throwing 4 2/3 innings while allowing three earned runs and five hits. Four New York relievers combined to allow just one hit while striking out seven in 4 1/3 innings.
