BALTIMORE — After a disappointing defeat last night, the New York Yankees felt the immediately need to stop one of their longest losing streaks of the season.
Emphasis on immediate, as in making a statement on the very first pitch of the game to make things right.
Paul Goldschmidt launched a lead-off home run on the first pitch of the game, sending the Yankees on their way to a 6-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles inside Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Tuesday evening. Trent Grisham capped a five-run third-inning with a three-run blast to centerfield as New York snapped a four-game losing streak.
Bouncing back from his worst start of the season last week in Texas, Will Warren allowed two runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings pitched while striking out six to record his fifth win of the season.
During the Yankees’ four-game skid — which included a three-game sweep last weekend in Milwaukee — they managed to score just a combined total of eight runs, and New York came into Tuesday averaging just 3.9 runs scored in its 20 road games compared to 6.5 runs in their 20 contests at Yankee Stadium.
Goldschmidt, a former league MVP who now platoons and sees action mostly against left-handed pitching, smacked the first pitch from southpaw Trevor Rogers over the high left-field wall to get the Yankees off to the perfect start. His last two home runs have led off the game dating back to last Saturday against the Brewers, and tonight’s dinger was the 376th of his career.
“I just try to take my normal at-bat; I don’t try to make a decision if I’m going to swing or not before the at-bat,” Goldschmidt said. “I just try to see the ball and react, and fortunately, I was able to get one there.”
