NEW YORK — If the New York Mets are to complete an unbelievable run to clinch a playoff spot in 2019 during the final three weeks of the season, their stars have to perform like their All-Star selves every time they go out onto the field.

In other words, exactly the way they did on Monday night.

Starting pitcher Jacob deGrom struck out 11 batters over seven dominant innings while Pete Alonso continued his chase for the all-time rookie home run record with his 46th and 47th dingers this season as the Mets defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1 in the first game of a crucial four-game set at Citi Field.

Though the win did not move New York any closer to the Chicago Cubs, who also won on Monday, for the final Wild Card spot, the Mets gained ground on Arizona, who came into the evening just 1.5 games behind the Cubs.
