NEW YORK — The phenom on the mound inside Yankee Stadium on Thursday had little to do with the reigning MVP, and mostly with the man in pinstripes who’s continuing to stake his claim as frontrunner for this year’s Cy Young Award.

Nestor Cortes pitched seven scoreless innings while Matt Carpenter led off the game with the first of the Yankees’ four solo home runs — three off of Los Angeles starter Shohei Ohtani — as New York defeated the Angels 6-1 in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday.
