NEW YORK — Enough times during his illustrious career, New York Mets starter Jacob deGrom has had many observers wonder facetiously (most times) whether his electric stuff makes him not human. As his latest start quickly was turning into one that could end up being his last as a New York Met, deGrom proved to be human at one of the most crucial moments, though he doesn’t know exactly when he let his guard down.

Fortunately for Mets fans, it had nothing to little to do with his mechanics, which were on-point once more to keep the Mets’ historic season alive for at least one more game.

Pitching out of jams in the third and fifth innings that threatened to give his opponent the lead, deGrom went six innings while allowing two runs and striking out eight in helping to lead New York to a 7-3 victory over the San Diego Padres to tie the National League Wild Card Round series at one game apiece, with tomorrow’s winner-take-all set for tomorrow evening.

Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso each hit solo home runs to stake deGrom to one-run leads, and Jeff McNeil’s two-run double in the seventh inning gave the Mets some much-needed breathing room during a four-run inning that salted the game away.
