BALTIMORE — For the San Francisco Giants, the first two games of their latest series is a case of “where has this been all season?” In the other dugout, the Baltimore Orioles and their fans continue to wonder “where has our once-promising season gone?”

Mike Yastrzemski hit a lead-off home run for a second consecutive game, and the Giants subsequently came back from a brief deficit to defeat the Orioles 5-3 to take the first two games of the three-game set inside Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Mike Conforto also homered for San Francisco, while starting pitcher Hayden Birdsong allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings to earn his fourth win of the season.

Coming into this series 1-5 in their last six, all at home, and being swept by the San Diego Padres after losing two of three to the now NL Central-champion Milwaukee Brewers, the Giants have turned things around against another playoff contender while starting their final road trip of the season.

On Tuesday, Yastrzemski, drafted by the Orioles in the 14th round of the 2013 MLB Draft, homered on the second pitch of the game against Albert Suárez. Tonight, against Dean Kremer, the outfielder jumped on the first pitch of the game and sent it over the 373-foot sign in right field for a case of déjà vu.

“Sometimes, the first one of the game might be the best pitch you get,” Yastrzemski said. “So you always have to be ready.”

Yaz’s first career home run came on May 31, 2019, in Camden Yards against the Orioles, and has continued to haunt his former employer ever since.
