NEW YORK — The last link to the 2015 World Series champions provided one more shot of postseason glory for the Kansas City Royals, all while the franchise’s greatest ever player, and a link to the halcyon days of the franchise, looked on in the stands and across the street from where he made many of his iconic playoff moments.

Salvador Perez sparked a four-run rally in the fourth inning as the Kansas City Royals defeated the New York Yankees 4-2 in Game 2 of the American League Division Series inside Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night. Maikel Garcia, who batted ninth in the order in Game 1, was moved to the leadoff spot before tonight and responded with four hits.

As former Royals great George Brett sat in the stands, and memories of him being a thorn to the Bronx Bombers during four different playoff series between the teams in the late 1970s and early 1980s continue to remain fresh in the minds of the franchises, Perez emulated Brett’s penchant for big hits in clutch moments against the Yankees by launching a Carlos Rodón slider into the left-field seats to tie the game at 1-1 in the fourth. Perez came into tonight with a .462 average against Rodón (12-for-26).
