COLLEGE PARK, MARYLAND — One play at a time is a cliché that has pretty much gone the way of the Pac-12 Conference, but the Washington Huskies needed to stay true to that mantra if it hoped to overcome one of the hottest teams in the Big Ten Conference and the country. And on the road no less.
For about the final 19 minutes of the contest, almost every single play went in favor of the Huskies, and they eventually ended up with their grittiest win of the season.
Jonah Coleman scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 3:21 remaining as the Huskies scored the game’s final 24 points, all coming in the second half, to stun previously undefeated Maryland 24-20 inside SECU Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Demond Williams Jr. threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns for Washington, who bounced back from a competitive-yet-disappointing defeat last week at home to No. 1 Ohio State and recorded its first-ever road win in Big Ten play after joining the conference at the start of last season.
“Just having our backs against the wall, and knowing that if we didn’t do what we had to do, then we knew the game was over,” Williams said. ”Just going out there with that mindset — take it one play at a time. Don’t try to force ourselves back into the game, and I felt like the game just came to us.”
