NEW YORK — So it was not a completely lost Saturday for University of Minnesota athletics in New York City.
Just a few hours after the basketball team lost to Ohio State in the same venue, the No. 13 Gophers’ hockey team used a late third-period goal to defeat Michigan State 2-1 in the nightcap of Big Ten Super Saturday at Madison Square Garden.
Minnesota completed the weekend sweep of the Spartans, just two days after defeating Michigan State in East Lansing. Tonight, the Spartans were the “home” team once again, but playing almost 700 miles east from their campus. And, like the win on Thursday, the Gophers eked out a one-goal victory.
Casey Mittlestadt and Brent Gates Jr. each had a goal and an assist, with the latter pouncing on a loose puck in front of the crease and scoring at the 16:31 mark of the third period to provide the game-winning goal for Minnesota.
Mittlestadt tipped home a Gates Jr. pass behind Spartans goalkeeper John Lethemon at the 11:23 mark of the first period to give the Gophers a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.
Cody Milan provided the only goal of the game for the Spartans, scoring at the 8:23 mark of the third period to tie the score.
Mat Robson earned his third win of the season for the Gophers in goal, saving 19 of 20 shots.
