The ALOST Podcast at 2019 B1G Football Media Days — East Division Preview

Robert Cole/ALOST
After a tumultuous season in 2018, having to play the campaign following the tragic off-season passing of teammate Jordan McNair, Maryland football goes into 2019 with a new coaching staff, led by head coach Mike Locksley. (Yusuf Abdullah/ALOST)

The new college football season begins in less than a month, with many questions waiting to be answered before crowning an FBS champion at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in the Big Easy on Jan. 13, 2020. Last week, we tried our best in obtaining some answers to just a few of those inquiries as we took to the road to get our coverage of the 2019 season on the gridiron started.

In our latest edition of “The ‘A Lot of Sports Talk’ Podcast,” we take our show out of our studios in the Big Apple and head to the Windy City, site of the 2019 Big Ten Football Media Days and Kickoff Luncheon at the Hilton Chicago. The two-day event featured each of the 14 teams of the Big Ten Conference bringing three players and their head coaches to meet and greet with the assembled media, and ALOST made good with our reserved spot on radio row to have sit-down, one-on-one interviews with a number of the top returning performers in the Big Ten.

This episode, the first in a two-part series, focuses on the East Division of the conference, one which is stacked with a number of teams that are surely to be ranked in the Top 25 of every preseason poll, including Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and Michigan State. From chatting about international trips and experiences overseas with Michigan guard Ben Bredeson to the impact of having a close friend and an African American as a head coach, as is the case with Maryland star running back Anthony McFarland Jr., our interviews did not shy away from hot-button issues while still providing the humor, levity and incisiveness that many of our followers have come to expect with our interviews. Six of the seven teams in the division are featured in this episode: Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State and Rutgers.
