FORT WORTH, Texas — The first couple of minutes of the game saw TCU get off to a fast start in its most important game of the season, only for that momentum to be snatched away as it faced a halftime deficit. Given another chance for a similar fast start in the second half, the Horned Frogs got all their paces right in securing a possible season-defining victory.

Guard Desmond Bane scored 27 points, including seven in a 20-5 run for TCU to start the second half, as the Horned Frogs came from behind to defeat No. 18 Texas Tech 65-54 on Tuesday evening at Schollmaier Arena. The TCU win snapped a four-game losing streak to the Red Raiders.

Kevin Samuel posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, coming alive in a second half when TCU shot 54 percent from the field as a team(13-of-24). Texas Tech came in allowing opponents to shoot less than 40 percent on the season and 38 percent in its first five Big 12 games before tonight, but the Horned Frogs shot 47 percent overall tonight.

TCU opened the game scoring eight of the first 10 points before the Red Raiders’ normally-stifling defense took control for the majority of the first half. Eight first-half turnovers by the Horned Frogs led to 10 points for Texas Tech, who also outscored TCU 16-6 in the paint in the first half.

Diane Smith made a jumper with 11 seconds remaining for TCU to cut its deficit to 31-27 at halftime, and that made bucket acted as the springboard for the Horned Frogs’ comeback in the second half. Bane scored 13 points in the half while Samuel had seven of his points and six of his rebounds in the frame.

On the other end, the Red Raiders missed all seven of their three-point attempts in the second half and committed nine turnovers, leading to 12 points for TCU.

Freshman guard Jahmi’us Ramsey led the Red Raiders with 15 points, while TJ Holyfield and Terrence Shannon Jr. each had 10.
