NEW YORK — The Big East Tournament, no matter the year, brings enough fire and sizzle for every college basketball fan in the Big Apple who chooses to help fill the World’s Most Famous Arena.

Then there’s the second game of the 2024 Big East Tournament this evening, which may burn down the house with the animosity that many of the fans harbor, and surely will express, when a longtime Big East head coach takes the floor for his new team.

Former Providence College head coach Ed Cooley is now the current head coach of Georgetown University Ed Cooley, with his departure from the Ocean State at the end of last season leaving many hurt feelings that are sure to be expressed in very colorful fashion when the schools square off just after 7 PM Eastern.

While the Hoyas have struggled in Cooley’s first season, putting up a 2-18 record in conference play, the Friars are well in the NCAA Tournament conversation under first-year head coach Kim English. Despite losing all-conference center Bryce Hopkins to an ACL tear in early January, the Friars racked up a couple impressive victories during conference play to keep them in the fold for a Tourney bid. One of those wins came against Creighton at home on February 7, and Providence would take on the Blue Jays in the quarterfinals with a win.
