LAS VEGAS — Game on the line. Possible College Football Playoff berth at stake. Of course, in that sort of situation, Boise State turns to its Heisman Trophy candidate and running back dynamo to pull the team through, even if, up until said inflection point, he didn’t have a Heisman-like performance.
Once more, Ashton Jeanty took another carry into the end zone, and the most important yard of the 1,376 that he has traversed so far gave the 17th-ranked Broncos their biggest victory to date this season.
Jeanty plunged into the end zone on a fourth-and-1 for the go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter, and Boise State’s defense held UNLV off the scoreboard in that final period to seal a Broncos’ 29-24 victory over the Rebels inside Allegiant Stadium on Friday night.
On the evening, Jeanty ran for 128 yards (on 33 carries), the second-fewest amount of rushing yards in a game this season, only a yard better than the output in a win against Portland State where a) he attained that mark on just 11 carries, and b) he did not play a down in the second half. Jeanty had averaged at least 7 yards per carry in each of his games this season, but only managed 3.9 yards per attempt against the Rebels’ defense.
“You talk about an absolute warrior,” Boise State coach Spencer Danielson said. “Every single [yard] was earned. He’s the best football player in the country.”
