WASHINGTON — The Washington Mystics were on the verge of a collapse, while one their opponents was rapidly arriving toward the history books. Undaunted, however, Brittany Sykes and the Mystics made key shots to thwart a big rally and maintain Washington’s winning ways.

Sykes made back-to-back baskets with under three minutes remaining, the latter coming on a three-point play, as the Mystics opened up a 25-point lead in the second half before hanging on to a 93-86 win over the Seattle Storm on Tuesday night. The win came despite the efforts of Storm guard Jewel Loyd, who came back from an ankle injury suffered in Seattle’s last game to score 39 points, including a WNBA record-tying nine three-pointers.
