WASHINGTON — The hallmark of any legendary sports rivalry is contained in its longevity, with new waves of talent — and the old-standing bad blood passed down — building on the great players and coaches from years past. The renewal of one of the blood feuds that turned the Big East Conference into must-see-television somehow felt different, yet producing the same intensity and skill that long predated yesterday’s thrilling game in the nation’s capital.

Two head coaches in their first year at their respective schools squared off inside Capital One Arena, and it was Adrian Autry and his Syracuse Orange defeating Ed Cooley and the Georgetown Hoyas, 80-68 — a matchup that featured neither Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim nor Georgetown legendary player and former head coach Patrick Ewing for the first time since December 1974.

The backcourt of Judah Mintz and J.J. Starling combined for 46 points for the Orange, with Mintz leading all scorers with 25. Syracuse made almost 54 percent of its shots from the floor (29-of-54) while holding the Hoyas to just 5-for-26 from the three-point arc.
