Snap Judgments: 2016 US Open women’s semifinals

Extra, Extra! Read all about it! We have a new Number One in women’s tennis!

The current women’s No. 1 tennis player, Serena Williams, will have been perched atop the WTA Tour rankings for 186 consecutive weeks by the end of this Sunday, tying Steffi Graf’s record for consecutive weeks holding the No. 1 ranking. But on Monday, another German, Angelique Kerber, will be the name topping the WTA charts, with confirmation of that coming Thursday night after Serena was downed in one US Open semifinal match by No. 10 seed Karolina Pliskova – who beat Venus Williams one round earlier – and Angelique took apart Caroline Wozniacki in the other semi. Ironically enough, it was Pliskova who defeated Kerber in the final of Cincinnati three weeks ago to prevent the German from becoming the new No. 1 at that time. On Saturday, Pliskova will look to win her first major while Kerber looks to put a cherry on top of a 2016 that’s seen her reach three Grand Slam finals, win her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open and come away with the silver medal at the Rio Olympics.
