NEW YORK — It’s very possible that the reunion of Carlos Correa and the Houston Astros will not come close to the halcyon days of their first go-round together. But, for at least one night, what was old became new again, and Correa and Jose Altuve continued racking up the clutch hits against the Bronx Bombers.
Correa’s run-scoring single in the top of the 10th inning scored Altuve from third base as the Astros recovered from blowing a two-run lead late in the game and defeated the New York Yankees 5-3 inside Yankee Stadium in the latest edition of their rivalry.
Along with scoring the game-winning run, Altuve smacked a two-run homer on the first pitch he saw in the first inning to give Houston a 2-0 lead. Another two-run homer, from Taylor Trammell, followed Correa’s single in extra innings to give the Astros insurance.
One couldn’t help but get flashbacks seeing Correa wearing the orange Astros jersey again just days after, probably, the most surprising move of the trade deadline in Major League Baseball last week when Houston traded for their former shortstop, who led the team to some of their greatest postseason triumphs, topped off by the 2017 World Series, before he departed for free agency and Minnesota after the 2021 season. While Correa isn’t the MVP candidate-caliber player he once was with the Astros, Houston needs just a sliver of that form as it tries to stave off hard-charging Seattle and Texas in the American League West while navigating its myriad of injuries.
With Altuve as the automatic runner to start the 10th, Yankees reliever Devin Williams, who was booed as he came into the game by the home fans given his season-long struggles after being acquired as a free agent from Milwaukee to become the closer, uncorked a wild pitch on his first offering to send Altive to third. A couple of pitches later, Correa softly lined a changeup into shallow center field to give the Astros the lead back.
Williams’ struggles wet from bad to worse — and the Yankees’ fans boos went from loud to deafening — after Trammell lifted an 0-1 pitch into the right field bleachers for his third homer of the season.
