CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA — While Toronto FC’s newest acquisition did not help the team come away with a victory on Saturday night, Djordje Mihailovic was more than enough of an inspiration to end the team’s losing skid — let alone instrumental in the goal that saved a point right at the death.
Mihailovic started the build-up that led to two substitutes, Malik Henry and Deandre Kerr, combining to score the stoppage-time equalizer for Toronto FC in its 1-1 draw against the Philadelphia Union inside Subaru Park. The goal put an end to Toronto’s two-game losing streak as both teams played their first league game since July 26. (Neither side participated in the Leagues Cup competition.)
Mihailovic, an attacker and accomplished goal-scorer during his time in CF Montréal, came over to Toronto FC from the Colorado Rapids earlier this month in a $9 million cash-for-trade acquisition, a move that the team hopes will boost the league’s third-lowest scoring offense. He did not have a clear chance on goal, but he did play the long reverse ball over to Henry on the right wing that started the attack for Toronto’s goal almost two minutes into injury time. Henry barnstormed down that right flank before his cross found the head of the Toronto FC academy product in Kerr, who headed the ball down and past Union goalkeeper Andre Blake for the equalizer.
Another striker, Philadelphia’s Tai Baribo, set up the Union’s goal in the fourth minute with a through-ball to Indiana Vassilev, who ran in on goal all alone before sliding home into the far corner to give the Union the early lead.
The draw snapped Philadelphia’s four-game winning streak at home in league competition.
