HARRISON, NEW JERSEY — Just a few days after winning their much-anticipated showdown last weekend, Nashville SC made sure that it didn’t have a letdown, and completed that task successfully just in the nick of time.
Maxwell Woledzi scored on a header in the second minute of second-half stoppage time, giving Nashville a dramatic 1-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls inside Sports Illustrated Stadium on Wednesday evening. The win was Nashville’s second straight and moved their league-leading point total to 46 points.
I give a lot of credit to our groupo, who continue to battle and find ways to get the result on the road in different wats,” Nashville head coach B.J. Callaghan said.
Distance was created at the top of the MLS standings last weekend, when Nashville routed Lionel Messi-led Inter Miami — the team that was second place in the Eastern Conference and in the overall standings — 4-1 last weekend at home. Tonight was much more of a grind for the Coyotes, as they had to withstand 13 shot attempts from New York.
The defense held up long enough for Nashville to pull out a winner, as Woledzi got his head to a long free kick by Cristian Espinoza and powered the shot into the net for the game-winner.
“When you have Espinoza on the ball, you just have to be in the space,” Woledzi said. “Luckily, I was in the space and I got the goal.”
